It’s the end of a tumblelog. Evident by the shiny new logo above, we can’t really go on saying we don’t have a logo, now can we?
It’s all good.
This place never quite became what it was intended to be. Originally it was supposed to be a series of entries about starting a business with no cash or experience, along with a generous smattering of iPhone SDK code adventures. So here’s the funny thing about starting a business; you don’t have a lot of time to write about starting a business. What can I say? We didn’t know. And as for the iPhone posts, I’m under an NDA that makes it kind of tough to talk about (let alone find help).
So we’re saying goodbye to nologo. We’re still going to blog about Mobelux and all the projects we’re working on, except we’re going to do it where it should be done; the official Mobelux blog. Head on over there and give us a follow.
Thanks for reading.

The company is formed.
The product is ready.
The website is almost ready.
Oh, and we don’t have a logo.

Can’t wait to show you.

Update time. It’s been a while since I’ve posted anything here, but there’s a good reason. I’ve been busy writing our first app, Tumblrette, the first full-featured Tumblr client for the iPhone. Over the next few days I’ll be posting screens from around the app and talking about some of the key features. More to follow (I promise)!

Anyone have a map?

Programming for the iPhone SDK is like being dropped off in a strange city and being told that you can’t ask any of the locals for directions. Sure, it’s still a city. It has streets and buildings, but none of the names are familiar and some of the streets are unmarked.

There’s also potholes big enough to eat your car.

…sleep is not really for resting the brain in the typical sense of the word since the brain actually remains very active at night while we sleep. So why do we sleep then?… because we need time to process the information acquired during the day.

Finding the Right Tools...

In creating anything it doesn’t take long to realize that having the right tool makes the difference. And when you don’t have that tool, that is when frustration sets in and you become ineffective. As we get Mobelux up and running, we have been learning to find the right tools for the behind the scenes work that make the most sense to us. Tools that are fun to use, effective, and get the job done. Its the creation of that system of tools that takes time. Biggest lesson learned so far… just try something and get moving forward. You will quickly find if that tool is right for you or not. Example: Google Docs… not really effective tools for us:)

Ideas on their own are just not that important. It’s incredibly rare that someone comes up with an idea so unique, so protectable that the success story writes itself. Most ideas are nothing without execution.
Just because you thought of a site to share photos with friends wouldn’t have made you Flickr.

Woof. Someone call the programmer that put this together and tell him that just because you can put a button there doesn’t mean you should.
I can assure you that our applications will not be anything like this.

We started a software company

Here’s the problem: we don’t really know how to run one.

Sure, we know software, but there’s more to it than that. You have to know lots of stuff you never thought you’d need to know about. For example:

  • What’s an EIN number?
  • What’s the difference between an LLC and an S Corp?
  • We have to file articles of what!?

It’s quite an adventure when you’re doing this for the first time.

So this is a chronicle of that adventure. We’ll talk about the trials and tribulations of code, but we’ll also talk about how we got here and what it takes to set up a small business.

And if all goes well I might even get time to make that logo…

Watching nonprogrammers trying to run software companies is like watching someone who doesn’t know how to surf trying to surf. Even if he has great advisers standing on the shore telling him what to do, he still falls off the board again and again.
